Howes School Council

Our School Council aims to encourage the involvement of children in the decisions that affect our school community. It ensures that pupils realise the value of their ideas and feel that they have a voice that can be heard. We have looked at a range of issues such as playtimes, lunch choices and the standard of the school environment and have been able to identify ways to make these better.

In October we hold elections for new school councillors. First the children are nominated, next they have to prepare a manifesto and give a speech to their class. Finally all the children vote for the people they think would make a good school representative.

Each class is represented by two elected members. A display board showing all our councillors is located within the school so that they are easily identifiable to the rest of the children and they each wear their ‘School Council’ badge during their term in office.

We have school council meeting every half-term where we discuss issues and work on projects. After each meeting the minutes are distributed to all classes and the pairs of councillors each hold class councils. This allows them to feedback discussion points from the larger meeting and informs the classes of any decisions taken. It also gives the rest of the children the opportunity to raise other issues for the attention of the main forum.
